St Matthew's Anglican Church was founded in 1851 by the Rev. William White, an Anglican minister and British Army chaplain. The church expanded and eventually became the Diocese of London’s first Anglican parish. In 1881, a major building project was undertaken to replace the 1800s building with a larger structure, which it remains today. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Namibia.

The church was the site of the 1976 Royal Anguilla Wedding celebrations for Princess Margaret. St Matthews has since been visited by several members of the royal family, including Queen Elizabeth II, who celebrated 60 years of reign during her 2012 visit.
