Worship Method:

The Dhammayangyi Temple of Bagan, Myanmar, is an ancient temple constructed around the 11th century by King Narapatisithu. The temple is the largest of all the temples built during the Bagan period and is one of the most impressive of them. The worship method of the Dhammayangyi Temple follows the traditional practice of the Theravada Buddhism religion practiced in Myanmar. At the temple, visitors typically participate in an offering ceremony known as ‘Kalar’, where they offer flowers, candles, incense, and prayers to the temple god. Prayers and chants are then made by the temple monks, while people kneel in prayer and light candles in the hallways of the temple. Afterward, visitors may enter the inner shrine of the temple to pay their respects to the temple god. Besides this traditional practice, other rites are held at the temple as well. Once every four years, a special ceremony known as the ‘Yadaya’ ritual is held. During this ritual, a special offering called the ‘Kadaw’ is made to the temple god. Additionally, on occasions such as the New Year and other national holidays, special ceremonies may be held in the temple as well. In addition to the religious ceremonies, it is also common for visitors to explore the temple grounds, taking in the majestic architecture of the temple walls and the carvings on its doorways. The inner shrine also contains a number of interesting relics and objects, including several statues, paintings and sculptures. At the Dhammayangyi Temple, the traditional worship method practiced by visitors is still very much in place. It provides a unique insight into the religious practices of the Theravada Buddhism religion, and is a great way to observe and appreciate the history and culture of the region.
