The Botahtaung Pagoda is a popular pilgrimage site in Yangon, Myanmar. Visitors to the pagoda are required to take part in ritualised worship and there are several steps to follow. The first step is to bathe in the sacred pool that resides within the pagoda complex. Many people will make a small offering of fruit or flowers which will be shared among the water creatures. The second step is to circumambulate the pagoda three times. This is done in a clockwise direction whilst mouthing blessings and good wishes. The third step is to prostrate oneself five times in front of the pagoda, whilst offering more blessings and prayers. The fourth step is to light three incense sticks and offer them to the main temple and the smaller one surrounding it. The fifth step is to throw nine white beans into the main temple itself. Lastly, the sixth step is to offer a small donation to the custodians of the pagoda.
