History:
The Yogmaya Temple, also known as the Jogmaya temple, is an ancient Hindu temple situated in the Mehrauli area of South Delhi, India. The temple is dedicated to the goddess Yogmaya (daughter of Krishna), an incarnation of the goddess Parvati. It is one of the few temples in Delhi which is believed to date back to the time of the Mahabharata war. There is a small shrine inside the temple complex which is regarded as the site where Arjun, the legendary Pandava warrior, had erected a shivalingam to commemorate the sacrifice of his son Abhimanyu. The temple is said to have been built some time during the 16th century A.D. during the reign of Mughal emperor Akbar. The main shrine of Yogmaya houses an image of the goddess carved from black stone while the smaller shrines have the iconic image of Shiva on one side and an image of two cows and a calf on the other. Apart from these, there are two other images that depict the goddesses Saraswati and Lakshmi.
