Muthappan Temple in Kerala is one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage destinations in the state. Worship at the temple is based on the traditional Kerala temple system. It begins with the opening of the temple gates as the ritual bell is rung. Offerings and poojas include chanting of hymns by specially trained priests, lighting of lamps, burning of incense and the offering of flowers and other fragrant substances. The deity is offered food, fruits and other such items. Special rituals such as ‘Tirumuttu’ and ‘Mathappu’ are also performed. The floral symbol of Muthappan is the lotus and it is offered to the deity as an offering of gratitude. After the prayer service, devotees take part in aarti (light worship) and the priests perform abhisheka (ritual pouring of water) over the deity.
