History:
The Gangotri Temple in the town of Gangotri in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, India is an ancient temple and one of the four pilgrimage destinations of the Chardham yatra. The temple is situated near the origin of the river Ganges, on the banks of Bhagirathi River, at an altitude of 3,100 metres (10,170 ft). The temple was built by the Nepalese General Amar Singh Thapa in the early 18th century. Nearby attractions include the Hindu shrine of Gauri Kund and the Gangotri Glacier. Worship Method:
The main worship method of Gangotri Temple is through the practice of Aarti, an ancient Hindu ritual involving the lighting of lamps and offering of prayers to the gods. The aarti is performed five times a day starting with the morning aarti at 7 am, the third aarti at noon and the last aarti at 8 pm. The aarti is performed in front of a stone image of the Goddess Ganga. After the aarti, devotees offer flowers to the deity and pour holy water into the river Ganga. Devotees can also offer worship to Lord Shiva in the adjoining temple. Aarti and Shiva Puja can be performed here.
