Worship Method:

The traditional method of worship at Deva Sharif Dargah in Barabanki, Uttar-Pradesh is called 'dhamaal'. This form of religious practice originated in the 14th century and is widely practiced at religious sites throughout India today. Dhamaal is a form of Sufi music and devotional dance, performed in remembrance of Muslim saints. It always consists of four elements: the “dhol” (drum), the “tanpura” (stringed instrument), the “shehnai” (double-reed instrument) and the “mridang” (percussion instrument). The musicians start off with a slow tempo and gradually build up to a crescendo. During dhamaal, devotees offer prayers to the Pirs (Muslim saints) by clapping their hands, singing devotional songs, performing Sufi “Qirtaas” (poetry or hymns) and dancing in circles around the shrine.
