It is best known for its ornate façade and extravagant interior design, which blend Baroque and Renaissance architectural styles. History:

The Templo San Francisco de Asís is believed to have been first constructed in 1769, and was completed in 1777. The temple was built to replace what had been the oldest structure in Antigua, La Iglesia de los Remedios, which had been built by the Franciscans in the 16th century. The current church was designed by the architect Joaquín de Porras and was the last great Baroque religious building built in the city before the earthquakes of 1773 destroyed much of the colonial city. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Mexico.
