It is part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Salvador and is home to one of the oldest parishes in the country. The parish was officially established on July 1, 1736 by the General Synod of the Catholic Church in Spain. After Salvadoran independence in 1839, the parish continued to be an important hub of Christian life in the area. Parroquia San Jacinto is home to some of El Salvador's oldest architecture. The main structure consists of a baroque-style church with Corinthian columns at its entrance. Inside, the vaulted ceiling is decorated with red, blue and yellow tiles dating back to the 16th century.
