The first recorded mention of the original church was in 945 when it was known as the Church of Santa María de Provensals. Its name changed to Parroquia de la Asunción when it was consecrated in 1774. In 1842 it underwent a major renovation, with the construction of a neoclassical façade and the addition of two bell towers.
