History:

In the year 784, Emir Abd ar-Rahman I commissioned the building of the mosque, which was originally with a small courtyard surrounded by arched arcades. This design was used as the basis for Mosques during the next 500 years, and this mosque-cathedral became the prototype of most mosques in Spain and other parts of the world. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Spain.
