The foundation of the cathedral was laid in 1573, and it was completed in 1813. It is one of the most renowned churches in Latin America. History:

Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral was built to replace the original main church of the capital built between 1525 and 1532 which was lost to flooding in 1629. The reconstruction of the church was initiated by Guadalupe de Rebollar in 1573, the viceroy on behalf of the King of Spain Felipe II. Architects Pedro de Arrieta and Marcos de Aguilar were chosen to design the new cathedral. Construction was completed in 1813 by Bisente Sifuentes y Padilla. After being consecrated, the cathedral gained great prestige until the 1910 Mexican Revolution when various church items were stolen. Since then, the cathedral has been slowly restored. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Mexico.
