The mosque was commissioned by Sulaymanname Hatuni, the wife of the grand vizier Kara Mustafa Pasha. The mosque was designed in the traditional Ottoman-Byzantine style with a single dome, a single minaret and four facades. The mosque has four walls and four minarets. Inside, there is a mihrab niche with a rectangular shape. The walls and vaults are painted with floral motifs and Quranic inscriptions in Arabic. The gates of the mosque are decorated with inscriptions written in Thuluth script. The mosque is also known for its well-maintained garden which was constructed by the sultan himself. The central dome of the mosque which is supported by four thinner domes has a diameter of 22 meters and is crowned with two crescent-shaped finials. The mosque also features two additional domes on the western side of the building, one of which is the melon-shaped ablutions dome. The interior of the mosque is elegantly decorated with marble columns and is laid with a patterned carpet. The wide, intricately carved wooden mihrab indicates the direction of prayer towards Mecca. The Hatuniye Mosque also has a number of ancillary structures which includes tombs, fountains, a royal hall, and a library, and it is surrounded by an extensive courtyard which is shaded by red carpets of pine trees.
