Hanging Church in Cairo, also known as Al-Mu’allaqah Church, is an ancient Coptic Church located in Old Cairo. It is the oldest church in Egypt, having been built in the 3rd or 4th century AD by the Roman governor of the city, over an old Roman fortress. HISTORY: Contrary to its present architecture, the Hanging Church was not originally built as a structure that appears as if it is suspended in the air. Rather, it was constructed as two levels, with the lower level consisting of a public gathering place, likely used in ancient times for commercial purposes and possibly functioning as a market. The upper level was used as a church. This original structure underwent several changes: the lower level was destroyed and rebuilt several times, and the upper floor was converted into a few levels, the top of which was finally made to appear hanging. FACTS: • The Hanging Church is located on the eastern side of Babylon Fortress in Old Cairo. • The church gets its mystical name from its elevated structure above the ground space, which gives the illusion of it being suspended in the air. • The church is ornamented with many pictures and images portraying the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary. • The church wall also contains lines from the Bible inscribed in Coptic.
