Casa Concha museum in Cusco, Peru is located in the former home of Jose Desiderio Weise, nicknamed Concha. Concha was a prominent Peruvian businessman, politician, and philanthropist initially from Germany who advocated for the Peruvian people in his later years. He was born in the city of Guben, Germany in 1887 and moved to Peru in 1924. He established himself as an important leader in the economic, political, and social landscape of Cusco. The museum was founded in 1957 to honor the life of Concha and his achievements. It was established in the house he used to live in which he had developed over a period of 40 years. As well as his former home, the museum contains a wide selection of memorabilia and works of art influenced by Concha, including furniture, jewelry, artifacts, and figurines that span five centuries. Throughout his life, Concha championed the cause of Peruvian development and produced a large amount of writing on the theme, including books such as “La Vida”, which summarised the importance of the concept of living. He also funded the creation of various buildings, including the City Hall of Cusco and the medical school at the University of Cusco. Concha was awarded many titles in his lifetime, including Doctor Honoris Causa and Member of the Inca Institute. Today, the museum is looked after by the Peruvian Ministry of Culture and the National Institute of Culture, and public visits are free.
