Capilla de Guadalupe, Isla Mujeres is a church located in Isla Mujeres, Mexico. It is known as the “Isla Mujeres Shrine” and is dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico. The original structure was built in 1898, but it was destroyed in a hurricane in 1917. A new building - the one seen today - replaced the original in 1956. It is considered the most important sanctuary on Isla Mujeres and is a popular place of worship for locals and tourists alike. It is one of the best churches in Mexico which you must visit.

History:

The original construction of the church dates back to 1898 and was dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Its original purpose was as a chapel for fishermen who would pray for protection before heading out to sea. It was destroyed in a hurricane in 1917, but plans for a new building began in 1925. The original design was never implemented, but the new building was finally constructed in 1956. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Mexico.

The church is located at the highest point of the town, offering a beautiful view of the sea. It has two levels, with a large bell tower at the entrance and two other towers, one on each side, located at the back of the building. The façade is simple but majestic, with two symmetrical pillars on either side, decorated with colorful ceramic tiles.
