History:

The cape byron lighthouse is located in Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia. It is the easternmost lighthouse in Australia and was first lit in 1901. Since then, the cape byron lighthouse has been the focal point of the Byron Bay coast. The original lighthouse was built of iron at the cost of 8000 pounds, the first keeper being appointed in 1901. In 1943 a turbine generator was installed to improve the illumination of the light which could reach up to 25 nautical miles, a range good enough for all vessels. The original lighthouse structure remains one of the oldest lighthouses in New South Wales. Due to its remote location, access to the cape byron lighthouse can be limited. It is currently managed by the New South Wales Maritime Authority. In 1957, the arched walls and dome of the fountain house were added to the site. The fountain is brought into action with the turning of the lighthouse light, flashing at intervals of around three seconds around the fountain. In 1990, the lighthouse was automated and the light source updated with sodium vapor lamps, which can reach up to 27 nautical miles. In 2018, the light was upgraded once again to LED lights which improved the range to over 36 nautical miles. The upgrade improved the light efficiency and reduced the running costs. Today the cape byron lighthouse stands as the last guard of the Byron Bay coast, flashing its guiding light every night to help protect the waters and visitors of the area. It has become a significant landmark and a major tourist attraction, visible from most points on the Byron Bay coast. Visit one of the famous monuments of Australia with your friends and family.
