Zion Baptist Church in Freedman’s Village, Virginia and was first located in the temporary home of a freed family on North Capitol Street. The church remains in its original location on the corner of 4th and P Streets in NW Washington and is the oldest still-active African-American Baptist church in the city. During the late 19th century, Calvary welcomed members from other denominations and inspired many civil rights leaders including Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who preached there in 1967.
