History:

Berlin Cathedral (Berliner Dom) first appeared in the late 1700s, but the location was much older. In 1465, a small wooden church was built in its place. For the next two centuries, calls were often made to replace the small wooden building with a larger and more impressive structure. In 1817, plans for a major Gothic-revival style cathedral were approved, and construction began in 1822. The building was designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, an architect who was part of the Prussian cultural circle. Construction was completed by 1832. In the early 20th century, the cathedral was the site of many of the Prussian state's imperial events and ceremonies. The cathedral also served as an important spiritual and cultural center. In 1945, the cathedral was severely damaged during the Battle of Berlin. It took years to restore and repair the building. It reopened in 1993, and today it is the main Protestant church in Berlin as well as a major tourist attraction. Visit one of the famous monuments of Germany with your friends and family.
