The town is home to approximately 7,000 people and is popular for its annual velona (traditional dancing procession) festival, which takes place each August. FIARAM Ambohimarina has a long history dating back to when it was the capital of the seven Bezanozano clans in the 17th century. The town has had a tumultuous history, being destroyed by fire and being rebuilt several times in its long history. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Madagascar.
