Fiangonana Ara-pilazantsara In Madagascar: History,Facts, & Services

Fiangonana Ara-pilazantsara, or Fiangonana, is the national church of Madagascar. It was officially established in 1942 by the French colonial administration, though it is rooted in the spiritual beliefs and traditions that were brought to Madagascar by migrants from Africa, Arabia, India, and the West centuries ago. The name Fiangonana literally translates to "the house of prayer" or "the prayer house." It follows an older form of Christianity associated with traditional Malagasy values and beliefs and is the largest denomination in Madagascar, with over 3 million adherents. Fiangonana has a hierarchal structure and is headed by a Patriarche who is the spiritual leader of the church. Fiangonana has a strong influence on much of Malagasy life, from culture to politics and provides a variety of social services to its followers including education, healthcare, economic development, and social welfare programs.
