The Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary is a Roman Catholic church in Antananarivo, Madagascar, a possession of France since 1895, and the largest local Catholic church. It is dedicated to the celebration of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary in the Temple. It was built in the beginning of the 19th century by the French who had just begun their occupation of Madagascar. The church is now run by the Archdiocese of Antananarivo, which forms part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mahajanga. The Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary has been witness to many events in the history of Madagascar. It was the venue of the coronation of Queen Ranavalona III, the last monarch of Madagascar, in 1883. The Church is also known for its association with the miraculous events surrounding the apparition of the Virgin Mary in 1898. This event is celebrated annually on the night of November 21. The Church is one of the most popular places for pilgrimage and are visited by thousands of Catholics and devotees throughout the year. Services offered by the Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary include daily assemblies, retreats, prayer groups and Masses. The church also holds several special events, such as processions, blessings of the sick and infirm, and Christmas and Easter gatherings. The Church also offers counseling services and a bible study group which meets regularly.
