The Church of St. George in Lithuania is a Roman Catholic shrine and pilgrimage site located in Siauliai, Lithuania. The church is a popular place of pilgrimage for both Lithuanians and Orthodox believers. It is the only building in Lithuania designated by the Vatican as a Minor Basilica. History The Church of St. George was constructed between 1827 and 1829 in the former parish of Varniai. It was designed by architect Karol Podczaski and is one of the largest churches in Lithuania. The church honors the life and martyrdom of St. George, the patron saint of Lithuania. The Church of St. George is the first Basilica in Lithuania. It was granted Minor Basilica status by Pope Benedict XVI on 4 July 2010. Facts • The Church of St. George is a three-nave hall church with four chapels. • The church is 6 meters high and encompasses a total area of 8000 square meters. • The bell tower reaches a height of 40 meters and is the tallest in Lithuania. • The topmost part of the bell tower is crowned with a 21 meter high gilded cross which can be seen from afar. Services The Church of St. George in Lithuania offers several services on the grounds of the basilica such as a church museum, chapel, guesthouse, library, and several other amenities. The pilgrimage center offers a variety of liturgies, retreats, and spiritual programs throughout the year.
