It was built in the late Gothic and early Baroque styles and is the an example of a traditional Tuscan-style church with three naves and dominant façade. The original parishioners were mainly Lithuanian and Polish, and the church was the national shrine for Lithuanian Catholics. Throughout the centuries, the church became a witness to Lithuania's struggles for independence from foreign rule. In 1912, Pope Pius X canonized St. Casimir, the patron saint of Lithuania, at this church. During Soviet times, the church went through a period of neglect as Lithuania was annexed to the Soviet Union.
