The Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel In Lithuania is the only Gothic basilica in Lithuania and one of the oldest religious buildings in the country. It was founded in 1272 in the Lithuanian city of Vilnius by Grand Duke of Lithuania and King of Poland, Mindaugas. The basilica construction was completed in 1340 and it was consecrated by the Archbishop of Vilnius. The Basilica stands on a hill overlooking the old town, and is considered an important monument of the city's rich history. It is one of the best churches in Lithuania which you must visit.

History:

The original church was erected in 1272 by Mindaugas with the purpose of serving as his tomb, but it was replaced by a Gothic style basilica in 1340. The church was damaged by fire and rebuilt several times over the centuries. In the 18th century, the basilica underwent extensive refurbishing and was enriched with a Baroque and Neoclassical facade. During the Soviet occupation, the church was closed and used as a military bakery. It was re-consecrated in 1991. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Lithuania.

Saint Michael the Archangel is the patron saint of the Lithuanian capital, hence the name of the basilica. The church stands 72 meters tall and its main belltower is situated along the south side of the basilica. The interior of the basilica is richly decorated in baroque style with an abundance of frescoes and sculptures.
Services:

The Liturgies are conducted Monday to Friday at 5:00 PM and Sunday at 10:00 AM. Eucharistic Adoration is held every Tuesday from 5:00 PM till 7:00 PM. Various other services and gatherings are also held at the Basilica.This beautiful church in Lithuania has made a lot of significance in the past.
