Catholic Church In Liechtenstein: History,Facts, & Services
History:
The Catholic Church in Liechtenstein has a long and rich history going back to the 16th century. The first record of Catholicism in the country was in 1595 when the Bishop of Constance, Johann Jakob Fugger, allowed Catholic worship and even founded a district of the diocese. In 1699 a group of local Catholics led by Prince Johann Adam I of Liechtenstein established a Benedictine monastery in Vaduz and in 1712 the bishop of Constance granted the prelature of Liechtenstein. During the Landesmünster period between 1755 to 1848, the Roman Catholic Church was recognized as the official religion of Liechtenstein. The bishops of Constance, Chur and Basel maintained close ties with the ruling family and government. The state and church-run schools provided education and religious instruction. In 1848, following the Constitutional Assembly, a new constitutional document was drafted that guaranteed religious freedom in Liechtenstein and separated church and state. All differences between Catholics and Protestants were declared irrelevant and as a result, the legal status of the Catholic Church was changed from being the recognized official religion of the state to an officially-recognized minority religion. Today, the Catholic Church is a vibrant part of the Liechtenstein society. Catholicism is the dominate religion in Liechtenstein and it's the largest faith group in the country. The Catholic parishes are located in Vaduz, Schaan, Balzers, Eschen and Triesen. There are currently 5 Catholic churches in the country which offer pastoral care and services for the spiritual needs of the Catholic faithful. The Catholic Church in Liechtenstein also has many social welfare services, such as a chaplaincy for prison inmates, a shelter, a hospital chaplain and religious education for both children and adults.
