Cēsu Svētā Jāņa baznīca / St. John’s Church in Cesis In Latvia: History,Facts, & Services

St. John’s Church in Cesis, Latvia is one of the most beautiful churches in Northern Europe. Built in 1206, it is the oldest religious building in Latvia and is often referred to as the ‘Cathedral of Latvia.’ The church still has much of its original architecture intact, as can be seen in its Romanesque tower and the stones the building is made of. On the flat roof are two tall towers, with a cross on the top of each. The inside of the church is just as impressive, with remarkable frescoes, stained-glass windows, and intricate polychromatic artwork. In the centre of the church is a wooden organ from 1793. This organ is one of the oldest in the country and it is still used today. The most significant feature inside the church is the elaborate Baroque altar, with intricate carvings and highly polished marble and jasper. It was built in 1690 and is surrounded by four large woodcarvings of the four evangelists, depicting biblical scenes. St. John's Church offers a range of services, including mass, baptisms, weddings, and funerals. In addition, the church organizes concerts and tours for tourists. There is also a store that sells souvenirs and religion literature. The Cesis Church Museum, located in the basement of the church, displays precious silverware and religious items, as well as ancient documents.
