History:
Sadu House, located in Kuwait City, is one of the oldest existing structures in Kuwait. It was founded in 1750 by a prince of the Al Sabah royal family from the region of Hawalli. The house served as a resting place and a center of cultural exchange for traders who were on their way to India, Persia or Baghdad. Sadu House was built in typical Islamic style, with vaulted ceilings, open courtyards and a large central domed space. It contained a roofed and open courtyard, two smaller chambers, a recess to which a door led, and two more doors to adjacent rooms. Sadu House is known for its weaving workshops, which are still active today. The fabrics that are created today are based on weaving styles from pre-oil Kuwaiti designs, Bedouin, Arab and African textile practices. Sadu House also serves as a museum, hosting many exhibits related to Kuwait's history and culture. In addition to weaving workshops, visitors to Sadu House can also browse the many displays depicting aspects of traditional Kuwaiti life.
