The Gangotri Temple in Uttarakhand, India is based on the ancient Bhagwati-style of worship and is a major pilgrimage destination for Hindus. The method of worship in the temple is very traditional and follows the Mahant tradition of Hinduism (which includes the recitation of mantras and hymns, and the offering of puja). Devotees can offer prayers (known as archana or arti) to the murti (deity) of the temple, which is enshrined inside the temple sanctum. Worshipers may also chant the sacred shlokas and mantras and offer flowers or other items to the murti. During the daily rituals, offerings are made to the deities, often accompanied by chanting of mantras or prayers.
