Pentecostal Evangelistic Fellowship of Africa (PEFA) is an evangelical Christian church denomination in Kenya, founded in 1924 and is one of the oldest evangelical denominations in the country. It has grown to become one of the largest Pentecostal churches and with a membership of more than a million in 2012. Its founder, Bishop Jabez M.N. Leslie, believed that the fledgling Kenyan churches needed to band together to ensure the Gospel of Jesus Christ reached Kenya’s rural areas. The movement was initially known as the Pentecostal Native African Churches and was officially renamed PEFA in 1932. Its core values embrace holiness, evangelism, and excellence. The PEFA has a multi-faceted mission that includes involvement in evangelism, church planting, and education. Its evangelism efforts are focused on outreach ministry, church planting, and discipleship. The church also provides pastoral training programs, Bible training schools, and literacy classes. In addition, it has several television and radio programs dedicated to reaching large portions of the country. PEFA also serves to advocate for religious freedom and to serve the needs of the marginalized. It provides free health care, community economic development projects, educational assistance, and assistance for those affected by HIV/AIDS. The church additionally plays a role in community development by taking a leading role in peacebuilding and the reconciliation process in many parts of Kenya.
