History:

The castle was originally built by the Ottoman Empire in the mid-fifteenth century and served as an important military base and fortress in the region. It is believed that the main section of the castle was completed between 1440 and 1515. In the17th century, it became part of the Republic of Venice and was used as an important naval base. In 1687, the castle was captured by the Ottoman Empire once again during the Morean War, but would later be conquered by the Venetians in 1690.
