History:
The first occupation of the Citadel dates back to the Bronze Age and relics from the Middle Bronze Age have been found in its structures. It is also believed to be the site of an Iron Age fortification, which was later expanded after the Ammonites conquered the city in the 800s BCE. In the Iron Age period, the Citadel was an important center of politics, commerce and trade, and was the center of the Ammonite kingdom. Under the Hashemites, the Citadel underwent significant redevelopment and it remains a major tourist attraction and one of the most iconic landmarks of Amman. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jordan.

The Citadel is known to contain two main archaeological complexes, the Temple of Hercules and the Umayyad Palace. The Temple of Hercules is thought to be the earliest building on the site, dating back to the 2nd century BCE. The Umayyad Palace was built in the late 8th century CE and is the oldest Muslim palace in Jordan. Today, the Citadel presents visitors with a unique way to explore Amman’s ancient past and is a great place to learn about the city’s history.
Services:
The Citadel is open daily from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, allowing visitors to stroll among its ruins and explore its many sites. A visitors’ center located at the entrance to the Citadel provides visitors with information about the site and its history, as well as a gift shop selling souvenirs and other historical artifacts. The Citadel also has a museum, a cafe, and a park with walking paths, play areas, and seating.This beautiful church in Jordan has made a lot of significance in the past.
