Ajloun Castle In Jordan: History,Facts, & Services
History:
The castle was constructed in 1184–85 under the supervision of a Kurdish soldier, Azz-al-Din Usama ibn Munqidh, as an important defense for the Ayyubids of Damascus. It was part of a chain of fortifications stretching from Egypt to Syria. Ajloun Castle was the fortress of the garrison entrusted with defending northern Jordan from the Crusader forces. It withstood the siege by the Crusader-led armies in 1187 and resisted repeated attack for almost 200 years. Ajloun Castle This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jordan.

- Ajloun Castle is located 60 kilometres northwest of Amman and 40 kilometers south of Jerash. - The original design of Ajloun Castle incorporated an Umayyad style palace, which is no longer standing. - The castle was extended and renovated by Abu Umar in 1214 AD and by the Mamluks in the 13th century and 15th centuries respectively. - The upper floors of the castle were accessed by two staircases, one leading up to the north gate and the other to the south gate.
