Located on a hilltop in Paloura on the outskirts of Jammu, the temple is known for its 11th century rich sculptures and sandstone carvings. It is said to have been constructed by the Raja Lalitaditya Muktapida of Kashmir, during the 8th century. The temple is of great architectural value and stands out due to its stunning beauty. The temple has a mandapa which was constructed keeping in view the international style of architecture. It is built using saligram stones in different sizes and shapes. There are stone sainnas around the temple, making it even more beautiful. The main hall of the temple is very spacious and is believed to have been built around 853 A.D. The hall is supported by 16 pillars and contains 12 heavily-carved images of Hindu gods and goddesses. These carvings depict stories from the Rig Veda and other Hindu scriptures. The worship method of Martand Surya Temple typically involves traditional rituals and prayers for Sun God Surya. It is believed that worshipping at this temple has a positive effect on one’s health and prosperities. Prayers are usually offered in the morning and evening. Aarti is performed twice a day at the temple. Worshippers enter the temple premises in a clockwise direction and first go to the altar where they offer flowers and make offerings. The priest performs the puja and reads out mantras related to the Sun God. After this, the worshippers light a lamp or a diya in the temple courtyard. The worshippers then proceed to circumambulate the temple and perform Surya Namaskar. This is done seven times as a mark of respect to the Sun God.
