TheJawalamukhi Temple, located in the Kargil district of Jammu-and-Kashmir, is said to represent the feminine essence of Goddess Parvati. The sacred fire burning in the temple is considered to be an eternal flame, which is constantly worshipped and offered abhishekams (devotional bathing) with milk and water. It is believed that the Goddess bestows her blessings upon those who approach her with a sincere heart. The usual procedure of worship at the temple is to make pradakshinas (circling) around the sacred flame three or six times. Devotees light incense sticks, chant mantras dedicated to the Goddess, perform aarti (a kind of prayer), and offer flowers and fruits in front of the Goddess. Those who wish to make a more elaborate offering can additionally offer coconut, wheat or jaggery, as a tribute to the Goddess. The priests also offer special prayers to protect devotees from any misfortune and grant their prayers.
