The traditional worship method of the Dargah Pir Shah Hussain Bukhari in Jammu and Kashmir involves a ritual called ziarat. This involves reciting selected Quranic verses, singing devotional songs, offering prayers, and distributing food (iqbal) to the people in attendance. Believers also bring clay lamps and flowers to offer at the dargah. During the annual celebrations (known as Jashan-e-Hussaini), Shia Muslims offer symbolic self-flagellation (matam) by striking the body with blades, which symbolises their grief for the martyrdom of Imam Hussain.
