St. James Anglican Church was founded by a small group of British army officers and their wives in 1873 as the first Anglican church in Ottawa. Initially held services in the home of Army Lt. Colonel J. V. B. O'Brien, the congregation later moved to a permanent building after fundraising and donations from members of the British Royal Family. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jamaica.
