Throughout the year, the Vestal Virgins recited hymns and prayers to the goddess and held special festivals in her honor. At these festivals, animal sacrifices were offered in the Temple of Vesta. The Vestal Virgins also participated in a special procession during the Vestalia, a weeklong festival held in July. During the procession, a round cake made of spelt was carried to the Temple of Vesta and broken into pieces, which were distributed among the Vestal Virgins. During special festivals, special votive offerings were also placed in the Temple of Vesta. These usually took the form of items of furniture, such as tables and chairs, and were symbolic of the goddess’s protection over her followers. Many of these items can still be seen at the archaeological site in Rome today. This most visited temple in Italy
