The Pyramid of Khafre, also known as the Pyramid of Chephren, is the second of the three Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt. It was built by the Pharaoh Khafre in the Fourth Dynasty approximately 2558-2532 BC. Khafre’s pyramid is the largest of the three major pyramids, though it is still much smaller than the original Great Pyramid built by his predecessor, Khufu. It stands 143.5 meters (471 feet) high, and is the only pyramid in Giza to have its original polished limestone casing. Like all pyramids in Egypt, Khafre’s pyramid was built to serve as a royal burial site, and contains multiple chambers and passages. It is believed that in order to integrate the passage between the pyramid and the mortuary temple, an inclined plane was used to assist with the transport of the burial materials. The Pyramid of Khafre (also known as Chephren) is the second largest of the three main pyramids of the Giza Plateau in Egypt. This pyramid was built by the 4th Dynasty Pharaoh Khafre, who ruled over Egypt for about 23 years from around 2520 to 2494 BC. The pyramid of Khafre is believed to have been originally encased with brilliant polished limestone, with a height of about 143.5 meters (471 feet) and a base of 215.5 meters (706 feet). It was 650 years older than the Great Pyramid of Giza, which was the first pyramid ever built by the Egyptians and is the largest and most famous pyramid to this day. It is believed that the famous Sphinx of Giza, a large limestone statue of a human-headed lion, was built to commemorate the achievement of Khafre's pyramid building successes and was possibly designed by his son, Pharaoh Menkaure, who succeeded him. The pyramid of Khafre underwent many restorations over the centuries and during the Middle Kingdom, it was encased in granite. It suffered extensive damage through periods of unrest and was used as a quarry in the 15th century. The entrance to the pyramid of Khafre was located to the east side of the pyramid and a system of corridors and chambers led to the burial chamber and sarcophagus of the Pharaoh. The burial chamber was made of granite and had two stone sarcophagi, one for Khafre and one for his Ka – the spirit that could be reborn or reincarnated in a new body. It is believed that although the pyramid of Khafre was originally built as a tomb for Khafre, by the time his successor Menkaure built the Great Pyramid, the Pharaohs of Egypt had transitioned to less permanent burial sites as people became more conscious of the environmental impact of monuments.
