History:

Arlanda Airport in Stockholm, Sweden, opened its fifth and last terminal (T5), Terminal 5, in April 2012. Located in Ulriksdal, west of Stockholm, Terminal 5 is positioned at the western end of the existing terminals, spanning 180,000 sqm and offering 24 check-in and security gates, along with a new pier offering departure and arrival lounge, restaurants, shops, currency exchange and other airport amenities. Terminal 5 offers direct fast rail services to both Stockholm central and Uppsala, as well as a range of domestic and international flights. It is the first terminal to have full-body biometrics scanners for passenger identification. The construction of Terminal 5 began in 2006 and was completed in three phases. The first phase included the construction of the two new piers, retail and services area, and landscaping and other external works. The second phase included the expansion and relocation of the airport’s baggage system, the construction of a multi-story car park and the completion of the new North Pier. The last phase included the renovation and expansion of the runways, apron areas, hangars and other activities related to the airport's operations. The construction of Terminal 5 was part of the general plan for the adaption of Arlanda Airport from a regional to a global airport. Terminal 5 is the latest of four expansions completed since the late 1990s. These include the construction of Terminal 4, opened in 1998, which includes a range of shopping and entertainment activities due to its position closer to the city center. In December 2010, the Swedavia Group opened the latest airport terminal in the North Pier, offering facilities for domestic flights and wide-body aircraft. In 2013, Arlanda Airport was ranked the third best airport in Europe and the tenth best airport in the world, according to the Skytrax World Airport Awards.
