History:
St. Mary's Pro-Cathedral was built in 1825 in response to the increasing number of Catholic worshippers in the city of Dublin. Not long after the Catholic Emancipation Act of 1829, The pro-Cathedral was given the status of the official pro-cathedral of the Diocese of Dublin and Glendalough in 1837 by Pope Gregory XVI. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Ireland.

St. Mary's Pro-Cathedral was designed by Irish architect Francis Johnston, who is best known for the impressive building he created for the Bank of Ireland. The exterior of the building is Tudor-Gothic, while the interior is more in the style of Roman Baroque. There are stained-glass windows by notable Irish designers, such as Harry Clarke and Evie Hone.
