Saint Fin Barre's Cathedral is a Gothic Revival Church located in Cork, Ireland. It is named after Saint Finbar, the patron saint of Cork city. The cathedral was built between 1865 and 1879, and is considered to be the finest example of its style in Ireland. Its architecture reflects the High Victorian Gothic of the 19th century, though it has undergone many restorations over the years. The spire stands at an impressive 218 feet, making it one of the tallest in Ireland. The construction of the cathedral required a great investment of time, money, and expertise. Following an international competition, local architect William Burges was commissioned to create the design for the building. Burges was influenced by French Gothic Revival architecture, and many of his ideas are still visible today. Burges kept most of the work to himself, sketching designs, overseeing the construction, and providing the initial funding. Saint Fin Barre's Cathedral is home to many artifacts and works of art, including a stone pulpit, woodwork stalls, and stained glass windows. The interior is dominated by a large rose window, which is intricately carved and considered one of Burges' masterpieces. The cathedral also houses a three-manual organ and a set of bells, which were added in the 1880s. The cathedral is open to visitors and services are held on Sundays. It is also a popular venue for weddings and other special events.
