Killodiernan Church has a long and varied history dating back over a thousand years. The church first appears in written records in 1178 when it was granted to a nearby monastery, Ss. Peter and Paul. The church is dedicated to St. Maedoc, an Irish saint and Bishop of Ferns who lived around the 6th century. During the 16th century, the town in which the church was located was sacked during the Irish Reformation, with most of the original structure destroyed. The church was rebuilt in the 17th century and the present structure is largely the result of the renovation and remodeling of the church during that period.
