Architecture:

The Wazir Mosque in Baghdad is an important early Islamic monument of Mesopotamia, having been built between 1017-1018 AD. It is said to be roughly 60 meters in length, with a width of 42 meters. The mosque is made up of a large semicircular arcaded prayer hall, which was originally covered by a dome but sadly has since been lost. There is a central aisle flanked on both sides by an arcade of four marble columns, which lead to a covered "kiblah" wall facing Mecca to the south. On either side of the central aisle stand two chambers, one housing the main dome and the other containing a square minaret with a pyramidal superstructure. An important feature of the mosque is the mihrab, which is a niche set into the wall which signifies the direction to pray. The mosque is constructed from a combination of white stone and dark baked-clay bricks. It also incorporates Kufic and script inscriptions in marble, ceramic and glazed tiles. These decorative elements were all crafted during the period of the Abbasid caliphate in Baghdad, which reigned from around 750 to 1258 AD. The mosque was once known as the "Yaqut" and was an important center for Shi'ite worship in the 12th and 13th centuries. Outside the mosque lies a courtyard with a kiosk and fountain in the center and surrounded by a stone wall. This area was used to accommodate worshippers during busy periods, and later became a graveyard for prominent Shi'ites. Today, the once-grand Wazir Mosque is a shadow of its former self, having suffered serious damage over the centuries due to war and other natural disasters, such as earthquakes. Despite this, its importance in the history and culture of Iraq remains, and it remains a testament to the power and grandeur of early Islamic architecture. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.

Visiting Hours:

Wazir Mosque is open to visitors from 6 am to 10 pm, seven days a week. The prayer times are given for each day for the traditional prayers and the mosque also remains open during the night.
