The Jakarta Cathedral is the final incarnation of an old Dutch Protestant Church, the Groote Kerk, which dates back to 1695 on the site of a former seawall. It was destroyed in 1862 by an earthquake and rebuilt as a copy of old Gereja Sion in Amsterdam.
