Worship Method:

The worship method of the Borobudur Temple in Central Java, Indonesia is based on Theravada Buddhism. Worshippers start at the bottom level of the temple which features three open galleries that are surrounded by carved sculptures. This level is said to symbolize the world of desire. They then progress up to the second level which is encircled by a wall with 72 stupas, representing the attainment of spiritual knowledge. From there, worshippers ascend to the top three levels. These three terraces and the large Buddha statue atop of the temple represent the transcendence of earthly desires. In the courtyard of the temple, Buddhists chant sutras and burn incense sticks while offering their respects. Buddhists also meditate while at the temple, both inside and outside in the courtyard and gardens. Pilgrims also use the bells sounded in the temple to keep track of the time while meditating.
