Overview:
Thanala Caves is a group of seven man-made caves located near the bank of the Tapi River in Surat district, Gujarat, India. The caves date back to the 8th century and feature intricately detailed, beautifully carved walls that depict images of Hindu gods, goddesses, and animals. History:
The caves are known for its complex L-shaped and J-shaped architectural plans and its varied sizes from 16 to 28 meters. They feature a combination of stone and wood carvings, and are decorated with laurel-shaped motifs, Gajalakshmi designs (a common Hindu motif displaying female figures flanking the central figure of Lakshmi, goddess of wealth and prosperity), and figures of Shiva, Vishnu, Ganesha, and Surya (sun god). The exact origin of these caves is not known, but they are believed to have first been constructed in the 8th century during the Solanki dynasty.
