Overview:
Svayambunathar Temple is a famous Hindu temple located in Kilputhur, Tamil Nadu, India. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is believed to have been constructed in the 12th century by the Chola rulers. The main deity of the temple is Lord Shiva and other deities include Ganesh, Vishnu, and Lakshmi. The temple complex also includes shrines dedicated to the Sun god, Lord Murugan, Lord Subramanya and Lord Krishna. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The main shrine of the temple is built in the traditional South Indian style with magnificent sculptures ornamenting the walls. The temple also boasts of a huge idol of Lord Shiva and an imposing seven-tiered Rajagopuram. The walls of the shrine are also decorated with numerous beautifully carved sculptures of gods and goddesses and an idol of Nandi, the sacred bull. It is believed that, once upon a time, a king named Veerappa Nayakar came to the temple, worshiped Lord Shiva and was subsequently blessed with a son. The temple has been renovated numerous times and the last renovation was carried out in 1617 AD.
