Overview:
Muktesvara Temple is an ancient Hindu temple located in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Supreme God of Hinduism, and the presiding deity of the temple is the main deity Lord Muktesvara. The temple is believed to be constructed by the Cholas in the 10th century AD. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The temple is an example of Dravidian architecture with intricate carvings and sculptures. The main attraction of the temple is the image of Shiva in the form of a mukti-vigraha (a release from bondage). The temple also features an intricately-carved mandapa (hall) filled with various deities and scenes from epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata.
