Megalithic cists and cairns in Sastirampakkam are megalithic tombs or burial chambers, built of large stones or boulders. These structures are found in the remote village of Sastirampakkam in well-preserved form, with most of them still intact. The cists and cairns form a unique cluster of monolithic tombs that are dated somewhere between 500 CE and 2000 CE. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The cists and cairns are constructed using blocks of stones and slabs. Single-stone cist structures feature a large stone slab set in place to cover the chamber. This is then surrounded by smaller blocks of stones. In some instances, double-stone cist structures are seen where two stone slabs form the walls of the chamber.
